Alright, so you’ve got your main stems gently bent and tied, looking all neat and hopeful along your wall. That’s fantastic! Year 2 is where the magic really starts to happen, and where you begin to see the incredible bloom density we’ve been aiming for. In my 800 sq ft Midlands garden, I’ve found this is the year the plants really start to "listen" to what you've done.
The primary goal for Year 2 is to encourage those lovely vertical shoots, known as laterals, to sprout all along your horizontally trained main stems. These laterals are your flower factories! Last spring, my 'New Dawn' climbing rose, which I've got running along a south-facing wall, absolutely exploded with blooms because I focused on this.
What I do is keep an eye on those horizontal stems. You'll notice new growth emerging from the buds along them. Instead of letting them shoot straight up into leggy, flowerless stems, we want to encourage them to branch out and become productive.

- Continue Tying & Guiding: As your main horizontal stems grow longer, keep extending them along your chosen path, tying them in as they grow. Don't let them just flop about. I usually check mine every couple of weeks during the growing season here in the UK; our unpredictable winds can really play havoc with new growth.
- Encourage Lateral Growth: This is the big one. Any new shoots that emerge vertically from your horizontally trained stems are your laterals. Allow them to grow a bit, say 12-18 inches, and then you can either:
- Pinch them back: For smaller, bushier growth and more blooms, I often pinch out the soft tips of these laterals once they've developed a few sets of leaves. This encourages them to branch further.
